IN LOVE WITH THE NAMES« Назад
Russian businessmen don’t hide their political affiliations. They know how to baptise their companies so to win the lucrative contracts. Anastasia Khlopkova has picked up the most juicy patriotic names.
AFTER THE NAMES OF THE PRESIDENTS
Vladimir Putin, who has been the President since 2000, “contributed” his name to the foundations and non-commercial organizations.
In January 2000, a businessman for Stavropol Vyacheslav Dadashev created a non-commercial “Public foundation to support Putin’s bid for presidency”. Eight years later, the organization was disbanded.
One year before 2004 presidential elections, two new foundations were launched in Moscow: “Foundation in support of President Putin” (closed in 2007) and “Siloviki for President Putin”.
Siloviki is a Russian colloquial word for the law enforcement agencies, including the ministries of Defense, Interior, Emergency situations, as well as the FSB, Prosecutor’s offices and so on.
The only foundation in support of a candidate for presidency other than Putin was registered by the leader of the LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky in 1998. In 2009 the foundation was disbanded.
In 2003, tourist agency Putin was opened in Moscow. The agency opened its branch in Arkhangelsk, titled “Putin resorts”. In 2011, a certain Ikhtiyar Abbasov started a fishing company named “Putin Ltd” in the same region.
In 2007-2009, several private security firms named Putin were opened in Tomsk and Novosibirsk. Tomsk Putin has been a profitable business, earning 75.7 mln rubles ($1.35 mln) while its Novosibirsk namesake earned 23.2 mln rubles ($0.41 mln).
In 2015 in Orenburg, two entrepreneurs registered the Putin Ltd dealing with construction industry. In 2007 in the city of Volzhsk two businessmen set up another construction company named after Ahmat Kadyrov, late father of the current Chechen leader. Two years later the company was closed.
During the presidency of Dmitry Medvedev in 2008-2012, only three companies bearing his name emerged.
In 2008 in Irkutsk, two businessmen opened the Medvedev Marketing advertising agency. In 2007 in Moscow, the woodworking company “Medvedev & Dmitriev Ltd” was registered. In Dolgoprudny near Moscow a local businessman founded the Medvedev Ltd, whose slogan has been “One can’t ban someone to live big”.
YOUR NAME RINGS THE BELL FOR ME
After Russia has absorbed Crimea in 2014, the companies named “Crimea is our”, “Our Crimea” etc started to mushroom.
In 2015 in Simferopol the Patriots of Crimea security firm was registered. In February 2017, the property leasing company with the difficult-to-translate name Krymnash (derived from the Russian-language Internet hashtag meaning “Crimea is our”) was registered.
After the “Crimean spring” some 30 companies have been registered under the same name “The Polite people”.
After the West introduced anti-Russian sanctions in 2014-2015, and Russia has retaliated by burning European food imports, a food-delivery company “Goodbye America” was opened in Moscow.
Eleven companies bear the name which could be translated as “import substitution”. They mostly specialize in food production.
A handful of firms chose “corruption” names. In Krasnodar, there used to be the Vzyatka (Bribe) Ltd but three years ago it was renamed SES.
In 2014 in Vladivostok, the advertising agency “The Creative Crisis” was set up. There is no economic crisis on this country, obviously.
