Corruption weekly news: April 3-7

April 4. Head of the Udmurt republic Alexander Solovyov detained in Izhevsk. The Investigative Committee (IC) opened a criminal case over bribe-taking on 140 mln rubles ($2.540 mln). According to the IC, Solovyov has taken 139 mln rubles from a bridge-building firm and 2.7 mln rubles as a share in a commercial company in exchange for issuing the necessary licenses and payments from the federal and republican budgets.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev for the first time commented on the accusations from the Anti-corruption Foundation. “What are these people seeking to achieve? Naturally, they’re trying to demonstrate that the authorities behave badly and that they are better than all others”. Medvedev called the opposition politician Alexei Navalny “a well-known character” who “openly calls to make him President”. Medvedev compared the documentary produced by Navalny’s foundation with “a compote”.

April 6. The IC detained a General director and owner of the Master Ltd Vasily Smirnov. The Master has been one of the largest contractors of the Presidential Administration engaged in renovation of the Administration’s premises in Moscow.

The search was also conducted in the office of Federal state bodies’ construction & reconstruction department director Vladimir Pavlyuchenkov. He has been suspected of embezzlement of 71 mln rubles ($1.3 mln) allocated for renovation of the Presidential rehabilitation center.

April 7. In the Maritime region, a head of the regional educational department Svetlana Trebilova was detained on suspicion of abuse of power during fundraising from the schools directors. In exchange, she had promised them her “patronage”. The IC believes she has received over 1 mln rubles since October 2014 from the directors.
